Historical Note - Week of January 10th
Daily Yellowstone Journal, January 15, 1886
At Cooke City, the scene is one of unusual activity for midwinter. Notwithstanding the deep snow, Black & Gassert are pushing forward their work and will operate the old smelter belonging to the Montana Smelter company, so successfully worked by Frank Esler, to whom the present bustle in the camp is attributable. The Republic Smelting company expect to commence operations on the 15th, and by next spring, the camp will be composed of over 500 working men. About twenty families are now in the camp.
